Royal Australian Mint - Day 2

Updated: Aug 2, 2019

The Royal Australian Mint was opened on 22 Feb 1965 by Prince Phillips. The intention of the mint was to make the new coinage system of decimal currency that was to start on 14 Feb 1966. Australia was previously using the English coinage system. Fun fact, the first currency used in Australia was rum (any alcohol) and was then abolished by Governor Gacquarie who comissioned William Henshall to forge currency using Spanish coins. He punched a hole out the middle to create two coins, the holey dollar and the dump. Nowadays the mint creates coins for multiple countries along with medals, medalians, tokens and seals.
